MYSTERIOUS AVEBURY & THE ENIGMA OF THE MEGALITHIC AGE. Built around 2500 BC, about the same time as the pyramids of Egypt, Avebury is by far the largest megalithic complex in the British Isles. It has a stone circle, originally of 100 stones weighing up to 80 tons, 1000 feet in diameter, with two smaller stone circles within it, all surrounded by a gigantic ditch and embankment, almost a mile in circumference. There were also two stone avenues, the longest running for a mile and a half, and a nearby artificial hill, 130 feet high. As one of the few such complexes to include examples of all kinds of megalithic monuments, Avebury was the ideal for Graham Phillips, author of Wisdomkeepers of Stonehenge and The Mystery of Doggerland, to host this one-day event where he revealed the secrets of the Megalithic age.

Guided by Graham around the astonishing ancient monuments of the Avebury Neolithic complex, we learned that the Megalithic people were a united, nationwide culture rather than the scattered communities often imagined, and that this civilization began off the north coast of Scotland when an advanced island culture sank beneath the waves. We discovered evidence concerning what may have been the true purpose behind the many stone and earthen structures at these sites. We learn of the ancient pottery containing herbal cures for ailments not rediscovered until modern times, the positioning of stones to plot the precise movement of the stars and enable the meticulous timing needed to plant and harvest such medicinal plants, and the extraordinary abilities of those who still used the stone circles during Roman times. We explore mysteries such as why the ditch and embankment were built the wrong way around for defensive purposes, why a massive artificial hill was erected with no burials or chambers inside, and why Avebury was so large it could have held the entire population of central-southern England at the time.
